Spiritual capital of Kaszuby.
Wejherowo is the spiritual capital of Kaszuby region. It's a large pilgrim centre in Pomerania too. The first service took place in 1652 with the participation of the Wejher family.
The most important destination of pilgrims is participation in indulgence ceremonies that take place in Calvaria. Since 1661, decrees concerning indulgence were issued only for a specific time. The Pope Innocenty XI in 1678 issued a special "breve" (a papal brief), in which he included an eternal validity of the indulgence received by the faithful visiting Wejherowo Calvary.
The Pilgrims arrive to Wejherowo for the indulgence ceremonies from many near and distant places. The biggest distance (about 100 km) is covered by a five-day pilgrimage from Kościerzyna.
The spiritual patron saint of the inhabitants of the Kaszuby region is Virgin Mary of Wejherowo. The painting of her is famous for it's glory and was crowned in 1999 by Holy Father Pope John Paul II. It's situated in the Franciscan Father's church. Virgin Mary of Wejherowo is a patron saint of the administrative district and the land of Wejherowo.
Calvary of Wejherowo came into being not only in honour of God's glory, but also as a result of the need of the epoch to the struggle with the Reformation. In the period of Partitions of Poland it was a mainstay of polish community spirit and Catholicism. Tradition conferred a title of the spiritual capital of Kaszuby on the Calvary. Popularity of this place bore the fruit of publishing Calvarias Prayer Book. The first prayer book arose in 1717 and has been published up to this day.
