The Calvary of Wejherowo, the urban buildings, set of parks and a palace are together create a uniform and attractive complex, specially in terms of landscape and architecture. It's one of the three most outstanding combinations of this kind in Poland. Thus, Wejherowo can pride itself on unique spatial arrangement, which includes connection between town and Wejherowo Calvary via set of parks with a beautiful palace.
The Calvary of Wejherowo is called Holy Mountains or the Jerusalem of Kaszuby region. For inhabitants of the northern part of Poland, Calvary of Wejherowo is the same as Calvary of Zebrzydów for southern Poland citizens.
Jakub Wejher began the biggest and most important part of the process of founding, building the Calvary of Wejherowo, by from marking out the calvarias paths and determining the building sites for 26 baroque chapels. The building begun in 1649. Scientifically unconfirmed information state that distances between the individual chapels are equal to the length of stages of Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem (distance measured in steps). Under every chapel, there is a handful of soil from Jerusalem. The hills of Calvary of Wejherowo were named after the Bible: Olive Mountain, Golgotha, Zion Mountain.
The architecture of the chapels was skilfully blended into the landscape; both those components (nature and architecture) are in perfect harmony. They complement one another too. Exactly as in Jerusalem, via Calvary flows river Cedron. It was once called Biała (White). The surrounding forest, in which the Way of the Cross is situated (4km), consists of domestic trees, which are characteristic for the landscape of the Kaszuby region. Majority of them are approximately 80-100 years old, but you can also come across 250 year old monuments of the nature. These Aged trees add majesty to the chapels. The Calvary of Wejherowo is quite different in every season of the year.
The Franciscan Fathers take care of the Calvary. They were brought to Wejherowo by Jakub Wejher in 1648-1650. Since then, Franciscan Fathers are bounded with Wejherowo permanently (with approximately a 70 year break). The position of the curator of the Calvary is always performed by the Guardian of the Monastery. The Franciscan Fathers are always willing to share their knowledge about the Jerusalem of Kaszuby region with arriving tourists. The Calvary of Wejherowo has been attracting pilgrims for over 300 years. It contributes to systematic development of the pilgrim movement. Every year about 60 independent pilgrimages arrive to Wejherowo.
Currently there are 5 Calvarias indulgence ceremonies celebrated:
- Ascension of Jesus Christ
- The Holy Trinity
- Healing of the Sick
- Assumption of the Virgin Mary
- Raising of the holy Cross
The indulgence ceremony of the Ascension of Jesus Christ is a so-called "land" ceremony. Pilgrims arrive from places situated deep in the forests, south from Wejherowo. The indulgence ceremony of the Holy Trinity is a so-called "sea" ceremony. Pilgrims come from parishes situated at the seaside. Three remaining ceremonies are local, which does not exclude the presence of the faithful from outside Wejherowo. They are cordially invited and welcomed by the Franciscan Fathers. The Calvary of Wejherowo is a place, that you should visit in order to experience the symbolism of 26 chapels in concentration and deep personal reflection.
